City Hopper: Dubai, U.A.E.
My recent travels took me to the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai city is located on the emirates northern coastline. Dubai city has emerged as a global city and a business hub. Although Dubai’s economy was originally built on the oil industry now it’s main revenues come from tourism, real estate, and financial services similar to that of Western countries.
Dubai has recently attracted international attention due to some of it’s innovative, large construction projects such as it’s Palm Island which is quite a site to see and its Burj Al Arab Hotel.
Palm Island is a completely man-made invention of islands out in the ocean built in the shape of palm trees. It has many residences as well as a few hotels as well.
The Burj al-Arab Hotel in Dubai has the dubious distinction of having people like Andre Agassi and Roger Federer playing tennis on the helipad suspended high over the ocean!
Another feat of engineering is the Burj Khalifa which is the tallest man-made structure in the world standing at 2,723 feet (829.84m) tall. The building officially opened in January 2010 and contains a hotel, residential housing as well as corporate offices and a restaurant. The observation deck aptly named ‘At The Top’ is located not quite ‘at the top’ on the 124th floor! The building has over 160 floors!
If you’d like to check out the website for the Burj Khalifa and find out some more really interesting facts about it then just click here!
If you’re looking for something to do in Dubai there’s everything from shopping, eating at fantastic restaurants, to skiing! Yes, I said skiing. In keeping with Dubai’s reputation for building outrageous things because…well, they can…they have built an indoor ski resort complete with snow and ski lifts at Ski Dubai located in their opulent shopping mall (Click here to check it out). Here’s a great video that tells you more about it too.
Well that’s all for now. Come back soon and see where I am off to next…
